Reds ready for OFSAA
The Denis Morris Reds have a shot at redemption on home ice this week at the OFSAA AAA senior boys hockey championships.
The Reds qualified for the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Association championships as host club after being eliminated at the SOSSA (Southern Ontario Secondary School Association) playdowns in St. Catharines earlier this month.
The Waterdown Warriors topped the Lakeshore Catholic Gators in the SOSSA finals and are also entered.
Reds coach Billy MacLaren has high hopes the Reds can contend. DM went 24-6 overall this season.
“We have everyone healthy and should be a competitor at OFSAA this year,” said MacLaren, who is assisted by Matt Vinc, Craig Bell, Frank Cappelletti and manager Nikki Royer. “We could be missing some of the 03’s if they win during their play-in game versus Halton.”
MacLaren loves the work ethic his players bring to the rink.
“Our boys are much like the group we had in 2010. We have a ton of grit and will out-work teams for the common goal of winning and making it through round-robin play,” he said. “If we can do that — along with a little puck luck — anything could happen.”
The tournament kicks off Wednesday at 8 a.m. The Reds take on Eastview of Barrie at 9:45 a.m. and then play A.B. Lucas of London at 2 p.m. The Reds conclude the round-robin Thursday at 8:15 a.m. when they play Malvern Collegiate Institute of Toronto.
The quarter-finals begin at 4 p.m. Thursday. The semifinals get underway Friday at 9 a.m. The bronze medal game will be held Friday at 2 p.m. followed by the gold medal game at 4 p.m.
All games will be played at the Seymour-Hannah Sports Complex.
Tickets are $20 for a tournament pass; $10 for a day pass; $5 for students. Seniors 65 and over are free.
