Meteors season comes to an end
The Fort Erie Meteors finally ran out of comebacks.
The Meteors dropped a 3-2 decision to the St. Marys Lincolns Friday at St. Marys and were eliminated from the Sutherland Cup round-robin playoffs.
The Meteors finished the round-robin with a 1-3 mark. The Lincolns and Listowel Cyclones are both 2-1 as they head into the final game of the round-robin Sunday in Listowel. The Cyclones and Lincolns will then square off in a best-of-seven set for the Sutherland Cup.
The loss ends the most memorable season in franchise history for the Meteors who set a team record with 36 wins in the regular season and followed that up with a dramatic Game 7 win at Caledonia for their first Golden Horseshoe Conference championship.
“The big message is we’re champions and they’ll never take that from us,” Meteors general manager/coach Nik Passero said. “What they’ve done for this town will never be forgotten and they’ll be remembered in these parts forever.”
The Meteors, who have made a habit of being able to overcome early deficits this season, fell behind 2-1 after one period and 3-2 after two. The teams then played a scoreless third period.
“We were good all game. It was probably our best effort in a month,” Passero said. “We were good. We were on the front foot the entire night.
“I’m so proud of their effort. Obviously, it didn’t work out, but we were really, really good.”
Passero tipped his cap to the Lincolns, who are advancing to the finals for the first time in 48 years.
“We’re playing a good team and we spotted them two that probably we would never give up. Bad decisions, other than that, we were really good.”
Jaden Lee, Luke Bogart and Luca Spagnolo scored for the Lincolns.
Blake Hall and Zac Mizzi replied for the Mets.
St. Marys held a 37-35 edge in shots. Both teams were scoreless in three opportunities with the man advantage.
The Meteors will hold a spring camp the last week of May.
