Falcons atop the standings
The St. Catharines Falcons made it five wins in a row with a 6-1 triumph over the Buffalo Regals in Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League, Golden Horseshoe Conference action Friday night at the Jack Gatecliff Arena.
The Falcons improved to 17-4-0-2 and are two points up on the second place Niagara Falls Canucks with a game in hand. They lead third place Caledonia by three points but have played three more games.
The Falcons led 1-0 after one period and 2-1 after two before breaking the game open with four unanswered goals in the third.
“Not the best first two periods, but we found a way to get back to our game a bit in the third,” St. Catharines coach Dan Fitzgerald said. “Our special teams continued to be solid for us, which was good to see.
“Another four-point weekend and we keep moving forward.”
Matt Busby had two goals for the Falcons while Dakota Miskolczi, Lucas Smilsky, Evan Miller and Michael Davies added singles. Davies also added three assists.
Nick Toscano scored for Buffalo, which fell to 1-18-0-2.
The Falcons welcome Fort Erie next Friday.

Liam Van Loon scored the game’s lone goal 1:18 into the second overtime to give the visiting Ancaster Avalanche the victory at the Gale Centre.
Ryan Dugas made 30 saves for the shutout.
