Saturday hockey roundup: IceDogs win; Falcons, Hawks, Corvairs triumph in junior B
The Niagara IceDogs made it three wins in as many nights with a solid 5-3 victory over the Erie Otters in Ontario Hockey League action Saturday night in Erie.
The victory improves Niagara’s record to an impressive 24-12-3-2. The IceDogs have now won eight of nine to move into sole possession of first place in the Central Division, two points up on the Barrie Colts who lost to North Bay Saturday.
Erie took a 1-0 lead after one period on a goal by Gera Poddubnyi at the 12:40 mark.
The teams changed four goals in the second as Johnny Corneil and Ben Jones scored for the IceDogs while Patrick Fellows and Chad Yetman replied for the Otters.
Niagara took over in the third period scoring three unanswered goals by Corneil, Phillip Tomasino, who earlier in the game was stopped on a penalty shot, and newcomer Sam Miletic.
Colton Incze made 26 saves in goal for Niagara.
The IceDogs host Kitchener in a rare Wednesday night home game.

Falcons 2 Avalanche 1 OT
Newcomer Andrew Somerville scored 3:10 into overtime to give the visiting St. Catharines Falcons a win at Ancaster.
Former Avalanche Zach Lawrence scored for St. Catharines in the first period while Matthew Bridgwater replied for the Avs in the second.
The Falcons, 25-7-1-2, trail the Avs for second by three points with a game in hand.
The Falcons host Niagara Falls Friday.
Blackhawks 4 Meteors 1
The Thorold Blackhawks broke open a close game with three goals in the third period to defeat the Fort Erie Meteors 4-1 at the Leisureplex.
Following a scoreless opening period, Fort Erie’s Evan Miller and Thorold’s Trevor Neumann traded goals.
Kyle Preston, Spencer Blackwell and Daniel Lowe scored for the Hawks in the third.
Eric Dhillon made 29 saves in goal for the win.
The Hawks are home to Pelham Thursday.
Corvairs 11 Regals 0
Adam Craievich had three goals as the Caledonia Covairs dominated the Buffalo Regals 11-0.
Owen Lane added two goals while Nolan Gardiner, Sean O’Brien, Mark Bzowey, Andrew Burns, Cal Davis and Eddie Schulz also scored.
Brandon McCorriston made 10 saves for the shutout.
The Regals are now 1-32-0-3
