Nov 17 area sports: Junior B hockey; Notre Dame basketball, Thorold track fundraiser, Fairview bowling
The St. Catharines Falcons outgunned the Thorold Blackhawks 7-5 in Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League, Golden Horseshoe Conference action Thursday night at Thorold Arena.
Each team scored twice in the first period before the Falcons took a 3-2 lead after two. The teams then combined for seven goals in a wild third period.
“We certainly got away from our game tonight,” Falcons coach Dan Fitzgerald said. “Obviously, it wasn’t all bad. We scored seven goals, but we hold ourselves to a higher standard, especially on the defensive side.
“At the end of the day, we won the game and we’ll take the two points. We’re going to burn the tape and be better tomorrow.”
Lucas Smilsky paced St. Catharines with two goals while Romaeo D’Intino, Michael Davies, Tanner Ferreira, Zach Lawrence and Evan Miller added singles. Noah Perlic picked up three assists.
Daniel Rocco, Spencer Blackwell, James Guest, Mason Howard and Devon Thibodeau replied for the Blackhawks.
St. Catharines, 16-4-0-2, face Buffalo Friday at Jack Gatecliff Arena.
Thorold, 9-11-1-2, are off until next Thursday when they host Welland.

TRACK CLUB FUNDRAISER
The Thorold Elite Track and Field Club is hosting a pasta night fundraiser Friday, Nov. 24 from 5 to 9 p.m. at the Merritton Legion Hall on Chestnut Street in St. Catharines.
Tickets are $15 for a bun, garden or caesar salad, penne with red sauce and meatballs, or $20 for chicken parmesan (also includes bun, salad, and penne). Alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks (pop and water) will also be sold.
In addition, the club is holding an ongoing bottle drive. If you have any empty liquor cans or bottles that you would like to donate, a member of the club would be happy to pick them up from you.
For more information about the club or to contribute/ donate/ buy pasta night tickets, please contact coach Steven Fife at thoroldelitetc@gmail.com or 905-348-2214.
The club was founded in 2016, largely with the goal of removing barriers and providing quality training and competition opportunities for athletes who otherwise would not be able to be part of a track club.
Although originally based in Thorold, it has expanded and is welcoming athletes from any school or any part of Niagara. The club currently serves more than 40 athletes from Grades 6 to 12-plus, ranging from those who are new to training to athletes who have competed at the provincial and national levels.
“We are trying to do a lot with a little, and so far we have been succeeding but it really takes a community effort and support from many different levels,” Fife said.
The club offers all events but has had its greatest successes with hurdles and field events.
