Tutti gets the job done
Even less than her best was good enough to earn Trinity Tutti a gold medal at the Niagara 2022 Canada Summer Games Saturday.
The 22-year-old Welland native earned gold for Team Ontario with a heave of 54.26 metres, well off her personal best of 59.44 metres, but still good enough to get the job done.
“I actually felt really good today but it wasn’t clicking on the finish,” the Eastdale graduate said. “It’s been a long season so I’m happy with it.
“Sometimes you try your best and it’s just not up to par of what you want, but it was good enough.”
Tutti, who earned a gold and placed third in the shot put at the 2017 Games, is ready for a break.
“I would say it’s both (mental and physical) because obviously you put your body through a lot competing so often,” she said. “Mentally, I felt pretty good because it’s in my backyard. My whole family is here. It was awesome to hear everyone cheering for me.”
The reigning Canadian discus champion is going to enjoy some well deserved down time.
“I think I have two weeks off and then back to training,” she said. “It will be nice to have a celebratory drink and then just be able to hang out and relax a little bit.”
Tutti said she loved the entire experience of the Games.
“It was great. It was awesome,” she said. “The team was great — the staff, athletes, volunteers, officials — everyone’s been amazing and super accommodating. The atmosphere is obviously the most important thing in track and field and it was pretty great. At first it was a little dull but it picked up.”
Tutti has a special spot to display the latest edition to her medal collection.
“I have a curtain rod in my parent’s house that I put them up on,” she said.
Caistor Centre’s Grace Tennant earned silver with a throw of 53.86 metres.
