Kristen Kit coxed Canada’s women’s eight to its second straight silver medal at the world senior rowing championships.
Canada finished behind the United States in the event held in Bulgaria.
Canada sat in fourth position at the halfway mark before passing the Dutch and then the Australians in a photo finish.
“Kit (Kristen) made the call at the 600-metre mark. We all responded and it was an awesome race,” crew member Jennifer Martins said. “We were a bit shaken after our heat, but we still believed we were better than that. We knew we had another gear that we hadn’t shown yet.”
Canada men’s eight, which included Matt Buie of the St. Catharines Rowing Club and Brock’s Dave DeGroot, placed second in the B final to end up eighth overall.
Brock coxie Laura Court helped Canada’s PR3 mixed coxed four finish fourth overall.
Athletes in that Paralympic boat have the use of at least one leg, trunk and arms. It is also for those with visual and intellectual impairments.
“Our focus coming into the 2018 world championships was to achieve A final performances (top 6) while fighting for the podium,” said Rowing Canada’s high performance director Iain Brambell, a former Brock athlete. “This was accomplished with 10 of 15 crews making the finals, with four podium performances and three fourth-place finishes.”
