Oct. 10 Niagara College sports report: Golf, soccer, men’s basketball
Niagara’s men’s golf team finished eighth out of 10 teams at the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association championships at the Ambassador Golf Club in Windsor.
Aidan McVey was Niagara’s top finisher placing in a tie for 23rd with a score of 78-81-78=237. Ethan Siebert was 25th (81-74-83=238), Tristano Mancuso tied for 37th (83-82-86=251), Anthony Sartor was 45th (83-88-86=257) and Matthew Palumbi did not finish.
Fanshawe’s Ben Landers won the tournament with rounds of 71, 67 and 69.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
Niagara women’s soccer team’s record sits at 2-4-2 following a week where it lost 2-1 to Fanshawe (4-4) and recorded a 1-1 tie with Redeemer (3-1-4).
Scoring for the Knights were Mia DiPasquale and Tori Hultink.
“I was very happy with our performance against Redeemer on Saturday. They’re one of the top teams in the OCAA, having only lost one game this season,” Niagara head coach Rob Lalama said. “We defended well and also moved the ball well in attack. I’m proud of how this young team has improved in eight games.”
The Knights are at Humber (5-0-3) Wednesday before hosting Mohawk (6-1-1) Friday at 6 p.m. at Young’s Sportsplex. There will be a Spooky Tailgate at Young’s Sportsplex as the team plays its last home game of the regular season.
MEN’S SOCCER
Niagara’s men’s soccer team saw its OCAA record fall to 1-7 following a 4-0 loss to Fanshawe (5-1-2) and a 6-2 setback at the hands of Redeemer (3-5).
Scoring for Niagara were Nate Smyth and Mike DiMaurizio.
“We started the Fanshawe game with a good stride and I felt good about what was happening against a very good team. At 30 minutes, an incident between players resulted in our player being dismissed and you can’t expect to succeed against Fanshawe a man short,” Niagara head coach Frank DeChellis said. “Our effort with 10 players was inspiring and individual decisions were good, but we just couldn’t stop the dam from bursting for 60 minutes.”
Against Redeemer, he was floored how his team could have the ball for so much of the game and lose 6-2.
“What’s frustrating is we have a team-wide mental weakness that we have been addressing and it was the root of the first two goals against. Full credit to Redeemer because they punished us for every mistake we made.”
Niagara has been struggling with player availability due to injuries and a suspension.
“I feel like we have this prize waiting for us in a vault and we’ve tried every combination with no luck in opening the door,” DeChellis said. “As a coach, I am happy for the guys who have been working hard and making the most of the meaningful game minutes they have been getting.”
The Knights are at Humber (6-0-2) Wednesday before hosting Mohawk (2-5-1) Friday at 8 p.m. at Young’s Sportsplex. There will be a Spooky Tailgate at Young’s Sportsplex as the team plays its last home game of the regular season.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
Niagara’s men’s basketball squad defeated Fleming College 98-56 in exhibition action.
Leading scorers for Niagara were Raheem Dennis (21), Reggie Williams (17) and Adrian Pajor (17).
“We started strong last night and we were able to get 13 guys quality playing time,” Niagara head coach Phil Mosley said. “Our depth will hopefully compliment our style of play and these early games allow us to build confidence with our guys.”
