The Niagara IceDogs picked up some much needed help on the backline Thursday dealing for defenceman Matthew Virgilio from the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds.
The IceDogs are sending four draft picks to the Greyhounds — a 2026 second-round pick (Kingston), a 2025 third-round pick (Flint), a 2026 fourth-round pick (North Bay) and a 2026 10th-pound pick (Sault Ste. Marie).
Virgilio, a native of Vaughan, was originally selected in the fourth round, 78th overall by the Greyhounds in the 2022 OHL Priority Selection. Prior to his commitment with the Greyhounds, Virgilio was committed to the University of Michigan (NCAA), after spending his draft year with St. Andrew’s College (CAHS). Across two seasons with the Greyhounds, the 5-foot-11, 183-pound, right-handed defenceman has suited up in 128 regular season games (8 goals, 22 assists).
In addition to his OHL experience, Virgilio was selected to represent Team Canada at the U17 World Hockey Challenge in 2022, suiting up in seven games for Team Black.
“We welcome Matthew to the IceDogs family. He will be an integral part of our D-core moving forward. We are very pleased to bring his experience and high level of play into our organization as we head into the 2024 season,” IceDogs general manager Wes Consorti said.
