Aug. 5 Local Sports: Niagara United soccer; GAO bantam golf; Henley gold
The Niagara United under-11 boys soccer team won the Brossard Challenge soccer tournament in Brossard, Que.
Niagara United went undefeated in round-robin play, defeating GS United 4-2, tying Boucherville 3-3 and defeating St. Laurent 3-0. It advanced to the semifinals and blanked Montis 6-0. In the final, Niagara United beat Barrie 2-1.
The coaches and parents were very proud of their team for representing Niagara with sportsmanship and determination.
Members of the squad, coached by head coach Tony Carbonara and assistant Bobby Beaupit, were: Calan Perrotta, Luca Marino, Brennan Beaupit, Austin Cerros, Rocky Sacco, Donovan Romanuk, Adriano Carbonara, Jordan Fabiano, Ivan Ratelle, Mason Fabiano, Danny Serravalle, Pablo Gonzalez, Andrew Dekker, Chance Choi and Jack Tachjian.
JULIE TIES FOR 33RD
Sawmill’s Ben Julie carded rounds of 79 and 82 at the Trafalgar Golf and Country Club to tie for 33rd at the Ontario bantam boys (under-15) golf championship.
Other locals in the field were: Sawmill’s Matthew Gray (71-92), tied for 36th; Sawmill’s Andrew Burciul (85-83), tied for 47th; and, St. Catharines Golf and Country Club’s Chase Partridge (84-84), tied for 47th.
HENLEY GOLDS
Local crews that won Henley gold Thursday included the St. Catharines Rowing Club’s men’s senior lightweight four (Christopher Gomez, Seth Moyer, Jeremy Langelaan and Nikolas Schramm); Notre Dame’s Clara VanDyk in the women’s under-19 single; St. Catharines Rowing Club’s Matthew Finley in the men’s senior single; and, Notre Dame’s Alessio Perco in the men’s under-19 single.
